How our Business & Community Fund was able to support East Coast Day Opportunities
Our Business and Community Fund exists to support projects that create meaningful social impact within local communities. One organisation that embodies the spirit of the fund is East Coast Day Opportunities, a Portavogie-based day service that is transforming the lives of adults with learning disabilities and acquired brain injuries while making a positive contribution to the wider community.
The organisation offers a wide range of activities designed to promote personal development and wellbeing. Participants can learn practical skills such as cookery, money management, shopping and social communication, while also taking part in workshops covering topics including personal hygiene, relationships, internet safety, food hygiene and first aid. Physical and mental wellbeing are equally important, with opportunities to enjoy nature walks, gym activities, mindfulness sessions and other health-focused programmes.
Why the Funding Was Needed
Determined to make a difference, Janine and Llewellyn created East Coast Day Opportunities to provide a safe, supportive and enriching environment where participants could continue developing skills, confidence and independence. However, like many new social enterprises, turning a vision into a sustainable service required significant investment.
As a newly established organisation, East Coast Day Opportunities needed support to create a hub that was fit for purpose and accessible to participants.
Their Business and Community Fund application highlighted a range of essential start-up costs, including building adaptations, electrical upgrades, furniture, kitchen equipment, office technology, marketing and staff training. These investments were necessary to create a safe and welcoming environment where participants could learn, socialise and thrive. Most importantly, it was about ensuring the organisation could begin delivering meaningful community impact from day one.
